PMCP’s 47th Anniversary and Annual Scientific Conference

The Pest Management Council of the Philippines, Inc. (PMCP) recently held its 47th Anniversary and  Annual Scientific Conference last March 8-11 at Naga City, Camarines Sur with the theme “Sustainable Pest Management of Today and Tomorrow”. The PMCP consists of 6 member societies namely the Weed Science Society of the Philippines (WSSP), Philippine Association of Entomologists (PAE), Philippine Phytopathological Society (PPS), Pest Control Association of the Philippines (PCAP), Crop Protection Association of the Philippines (CPAP), and CropLife.

The 4-day event was attended by the PMCP member societies, local scientists, researchers, students, and private companies. There are different activities lined-up during the duration of the event including Farmer’s Forum and Pest Clinic, Scientific Sessions, a field trip to Albay, and a PMCP Fellowship Night with a Latino theme sponsored by Leads Agri. There were also exhibit booths to showcase different products and services aimed at eradicating pests.

During the Farmer’s Forum and Pest Clinic, the speakers from PMCP discussed the different pests that may damage the different plants of farmers and what to do with them. They also showed examples of different plants and the type of pest that may damage these plants. They also brought samples of different plants to examine under the microscope.

The incoming President of PMCP, Mr. Fernando Malveda, along with the other incoming PMCP Officers took their oath for 2016-2017. Aside from the induction of the new officers, there were different awards presented during the Fellowship Night on the first day, and the Banquet Night on the last day. Some of the awards given include:

  • MR Vega Memorial Award, won by Jhoana Operia with the topic “Development of Integrated Weed Management Strategies in Rice and Rice-based Cropping Systems”[1]
  • Pest Management Award in Extension and Community Development, won by Dr. Candida B. Adalla from the University of the Philippines Los Baños
  • Pest Management Award in Instruction, won by Maria Dulce Mostoles, PhD from Central Bicol State University of Agriculture
  • Pest Management Award in Research, won by Merdelyn Caasi-Lit, PhD from the University of the Philippines Los Baños[2]
  • Best Undergraduate Thesis Award in Weed Science, won by Edelyn Joy Vicencio with the study “ Effect of early submergence on the survival of the growth of submergence-tolerant rice & weed species.”[3]

On the same night, Leads Agri was able to sign an agreement with PMCP to sponsor the 2016-2017 Best Undergraduate Thesis Awardees while the Crop Protection Association of the Philippines signed a MOA with PMCP to host the 2016-2017 Most Outstanding Farmer and Farmer’s Forum.
