Olyset® Net Story
A New Tool For Vector Control

More than one million people are killed by malaria each year, about 3000 a day! It is estimated that over 700,000 children under 5 years will die needlessly from malaria and at least 300 million people will be affected.

The objective of Roll Back Malaria initiated by the W.H.O. and its partners in 1998 in 50% reduction of malaria by 2010 through the following action:
1. Providing prompt access to effective treatment
2. Preventing and controlling malaria during pregnancy
3. Promoting the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets as a means of prevention
4. Dealing effectively with malaria in emergency and epidemic situations
In preventing malaria transmission, RBM originally promoted the campaign with mosquito nets impregnated with insecticides at appropriate intervals through community participation. However, RBM came to recognise re-treatments were impossible in remote areas, and low re-treatment events were even evident in many urban areas. Thus, a change of strategy required a move from nets requiring re-treatment to “Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets” (LLITN) the definition for which is continued efficacy over at least 4 years.

Olyset® Net was develop to meet the above requirement. With this product the active ingredient is incorporated into the filament of the net during the manufacturing / extrusion process. The current active is permethrin at 2%. The net has the following characteristics:

1. Excellent air ventilation for those sleeping beneath due to a wide mesh size
2. No requirement to re-treat after washing
3. Long-lasting efficacy for at least 5 years under most conditions
